5 Acrylic Tips That Will Save You So Much Frustration

Starting acrylic painting can be exciting... and overwhelming.

You squeeze out your first dollop of paint, pick up your brush and suddenly you’re facing streaky textures, muddy colors, and way-too-fast drying time. I’ve been there, and I know how frustrating it can be.

But don’t worry, this blog is here to help! Below are 5 beginner-friendly acrylic tips that will make your painting process smoother, more enjoyable, and way less messy.

1. Prime Your Surface

Your paint is only as good as the surface you put it on.

Whether you're painting on canvas, wood, or paper, prepping your surface matters. Using gesso as a primer helps the paint glide on more smoothly, gives your colors extra brightness, and prevents paint from soaking into the surface.

Pro Tip: Even if your canvas says “pre-primed,” adding another coat of gesso can make all the difference. It gives you a smoother base to work on—and your brush will thank you.

2. Go Easy on the Water

Acrylics are not watercolors and too much water is a common mistake.

While it’s important to keep your paint from drying out too fast, diluting acrylics with too much water can actually weaken the pigment and cause patchy or dull color. Instead, use a misting bottle to lightly hydrate your palette and canvas.

Pro Tip: Use a wet palette or keep a small spray bottle nearby while painting, it’s a game changer for longer sessions.

3. Paint From Dark to Light

Build your scene like a sculptor builds form: from shadows to highlights.

Because acrylics are opaque, layering works best when you start with darker values and move toward the light. Begin with midtones or shadows, then gradually layer in your highlights for depth and dimension.

Pro Tip: Let each layer dry before adding details to avoid muddy blending.

4. Blend Before It’s Too Late

Acrylics dry fast, timing is everything.

If you’ve ever tried to blend and found your paint drying mid-stroke, you’re not alone. Work in small sections and blend while the paint is still wet. You can also use a retarder medium to slow the drying time just enough to create soft transitions.

Pro Tip: Try Craftamo’s blending brushes or angled brushes, they make soft transitions way easier.

5. Clean Your Brushes Immediately

Acrylic paint can ruin your brushes fast if you let it dry on the bristles. Always rinse them thoroughly between color changes, and deep clean at the end of your session.

Pro Tip: Use brush soap or mild dish soap + warm water, not hot! Hot water can loosen glue and ruin the ferrule.
