About the Artist
Maisie Matilda is a UK-based professional artist and fore-edge painter who specializes in the rare and enchanting craft of painting on the fore-edge of books (the side opposite the spine) to create hidden scenes and intricate decorations. Maisie first discovered fore-edge painting while studying illuminated manuscripts during her History of Art degree and was fascinated by how the craft later evolved to decorate every literature.
Art has always been a part of Maisie’s life, from scribbling on her bedroom walls in felt-tip pen and doodling on the edges of exam papers, to painting full-scale oil landscapes. Today, she feels incredibly lucky to be living the life she dreamed of, working full-time as an artist and fore-edge painter.
Alongside her creative practice, Maisie is passionate about preserving this beautiful, endangered craft, now listed on the Red List of Critically Endangered Crafts by the Heritage Crafts Association UK. She hopes to inspire others to explore fore-edge painting for themselves, and to discover the joy of transforming their favourite books into personal works of art.
